Air Fryer French Fries with Campfire Sauce

Welcome to the third recipe in The Hungry Hungry Hiker BBQ Series! In case you missed the earlier posts in the series, I kicked off with the one, the only, BBQ Sauce last week. How else would one start a series on barbecue? Then earlier this week I brought you Oven Baked BBQ Chicken Breasts in case you, like me, don’t have a grill. Not to worry my friends. We can enjoy all the BBQ just as well as our grill-owning friends and acquaintances can.

How are you and your families hanging in there with the working from home, the unemployment, the homeschooling, the quarantining? I could go on and on with all of 2020’s generous gifts, but I’m sure you get the picture. The point is, what are you doing to keep your sanity day in and day out? I will tell you what my personal secret is. It’s potatoes. Are you shocked? Because you shouldn’t be. Last week I had an awful conference call that left me in a terrible mood. Then I ate a potato for lunch. And you know what? That potato turned my whole day around, just like I knew it would.

We don’t sneak out often, but once a month or so since early March we’ve made a big Costco haul to stock up for the next month of being housebound. And one thing I always make sure to get a ton of is potatoes. My Polish and German ancestors demand that I eat potatoes daily. I was thinking to myself the other day that if Whole30 never allowed potatoes on the program I would shun Whole30 so hard. I just need them, okay? And now that I own an air fryer I’m always stuffing it full of potatoes so I can continue to enjoy potatoes in all of their magical forms.

All that said, it shouldn’t shock you to learn that french fries were among the very first things I made in my air fryer, and I make them at least once a week now. They’re just SO GOOD and SO EASY. To this day I don’t understand how I ever survived without my air fryer. That appliance is a thing of magic and wonder.

If you’re wondering how these little delicacies fit into my BBQ Series, take a seat and allow me to quickly explain. IS there a better Whole30 side for a BBQ dinner other than some sort of potato? The answer is no. And we all know that french fries are pretty high on everyone’s list when asked to rank potato related side dishes. Adults love them. Kids love them. Whether you eat them with a fork (so fancy, you are!) or your fingers (so normal, you are!), they’re delicious all the same. Last but certainly not least, that Campfire Sauce I mention in the recipe title? It’s a simple but delicious french fry accompaniment that is simply half mayo, half BBQ Sauce. I’m telling you right now, you are going to LOVE it. If I’m being honest, these french fries are really just a vehicle for the Campfire Sauce.

Method
- Cut the potatoes into french fry shapes of uniform size. Arrange the potatoes in the air fryer basket, being sure to leave space on all sides of each fry so that they crisp evenly.
- Coat lightly with avocado oil spray and sprinkle with ½ tsp of sea salt.
- Air fry at 400° F for 10-11 minutes, until golden brown and crisped to your liking.
- While the french fries air fry, prepare the Campfire Sauce. In a small bowl, use a spoon to stir together equal parts of mayo and BBQ Sauce until combined completely.
- Serve the french fries hot with the Campfire Sauce on the side and enjoy!
