I didn’t actually use Oreos either time I made this recipe. Come on, this should not be shocking to you by now. But “Air Fried Gluten Free Chocolate Vanilla Cream Sandwich Cookies” doesn’t sound anywhere near as fun, and everyone and their brother knows what an Oreo is, so Fried Oreos it is. Feel free to use actual Oreos when you make this recipe. You do you. Live your best life. I’m sure it will come out just as delicious.

Okay, phew. So now that THAT’S out of the way…I’m continuing on with the carnival food here today! What would be carnival season in a normal year is fast approaching, and I want to give you guys tons of ideas for all the tasty treats you can make at home to make you feel like you’re out at a carnival having the time of your life! This kind of recipe is a little different from what I’ve posted on my blog so far, but I’m trying to create a one stop resource for you to find healthier alternatives for all your favorite foods. So, air fried gluten free chocolate vanilla cream sandwich cookies it is today!

There is an amusement park here in Connecticut that sells deep fried Oreos but they call them “fried bats.” Or at least that’s what they used to call them; I haven’t been to that amusement park in probably about a decade. I wonder if they’ll still call them “fried bats” after 2020. They’re cookies, not bats, and I’m sure 99.9% of the people ordering them at the park know they’re cookies, but still. 2020 has been a wild year and as we’ve learned, some people in some parts of the world DO in fact eat actual bats. I think I’ll stick to cookies, thanks. Anyway, my point in this whole rant is that, after making this recipe twice myself using my air fryer, I can kind of see where the “bat” comes from. Some of my cookies raised up on opposite ends, making them look like bat wings! It may take a little bit of your imagination to get you there, so just feel free to call them fried Oreos instead. You’ll probably get more takers that way.

Okay, this is very important. Let’s talk toppings for a hot second. Are you team melted chocolate or team powdered sugar? If I could only pick one, I’m team melted chocolate all day. But after topping my cookies with both chocolate and sugar, that’s the winner for me. Give it a try. You won’t regret it.

Air Fried Oreos

No carnival? No problem! Make fried Oreos at home much, much healthier with the help of a gluten free batter and your air fryer!
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Servings: 9 cookies
Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup almond flour
  • 2 tbsp tapioca flour/starch
  • 1 tbsp coconut flour
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp cream of tartar
  • pinch sea salt
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil melted
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened almond milk
  • 9 gluten free chocolate cream sandwich cookies I have used both Glutino and Goodie Girl
  • melted chocolate for drizzling or dipping, optional, I used Enjoy Life Mini Chips
  • organic powdered sugar for dusting, optional

Equipment

  • Air fryer

Method

  1. Add all of the dry ingredients to a medium bowl and whisk with a fork to combine. Stir in the coconut oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Stir in the almond milk one tablespoon at a time. Batter will be a bit on the thicker side.
  2. Preheat air fryer to 375° F.
  3. Get out 9 parchment paper muffin liners (see Note) and place on your air fryer tray. Scoop 1/2 tbsp of the batter into the center of each cup. Place one cookie in each cup on top of the batter and press down so that you see the batter start to come up around the sides of the cookie. Top each cookie with another 1/2 tbsp of batter and spread the batter around to cover the cookie completely.
  4. Air fry at 375° F for 4-5 minutes until the tops are starting to turn golden brown and the batter has dried.
  5. Serve hot with toppings of choice and enjoy!

Notes

Do not use regular muffin liners or silicone muffin liners in this recipe. The batter will stick to regular muffin liners and when I attempted this recipe with silicone liners these didn’t cook evenly and also stuck to the silicone.
