I’ve talked about Butcher Box on the blog so many times by now. I’ve been a subscriber for almost two years now and I love it so much. They’ve sent me so many different cuts of meat that I’m not familiar with. I used to think I wouldn’t like this about Butcher Box, but it turns out that by doing this, they keep my creative juices flowing, so it’s quickly become one of my favorite things about my monthly meat boxes.

One thing they kept sending me that I had no clue how to prepare is steak tips. The steak tips sat and sat in my freezer for months. They got buried. I knew in my mind that I had them, but I kept putting them off since I had no clue what to do with them. Then one day I decided to get over myself and move them from the depths of my freezer to my refrigerator so that I would be FORCED to make them within one weeks’ time. I work best under pressure, and I hate food waste, so I had a feeling that by doing this, something genius would result from this move.

It was crunch time, and I still didn’t know what I wanted to do with my thawed steak tips. So I turned to my trusty air fryer, since nothing bad has ever come out of there. And I’m happy to report that these steak tips are no exception! The steak tips cook up so quickly in the air fryer, and they come out so juicy. I love how my air fryer lets me cook up delicious dinner creations on any weeknight after both work and the gym, and this recipe is no exception!

If you’ve never heard of date syrup, it’s something I suggest having on hand for Whole30 and beyond. I linked the one I used. I purchased mine at Cost Plus World Market, but of course it’s available on Amazon as well. Is there anything that Jeff doesn’t sell?!

Total Time 25 minutes
Servings: 4 people
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: Chinese

Ingredients

  • 1 lb steak tips
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ tsp dried ginger
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • cup coconut aminos
  • 2 tbsp tahini, mixed well
  • ½ tbsp date syrup
  • sesame seeds, for serving optional

Equipment

  • Air fryer

Method

  1. Place the steak tips on a paper towel lined plate and pat dry. Place the steak tips in a single layer in the basket of your air fryer, leaving space in between each steak tip. Season lightly with the sea salt. Air fry at 380° F for 4 minutes. Remove from the air fryer and flip the steak tips over. Air fry at 380° F for 4-5 minutes more. This cooks the steak tips to about medium, but cook according to your preference and use a meat thermometer to gauge temperature.
  2. While the steak tips air fry, prepare the sauce. Add the sesame oil to a small saucepan over medium low heat. Add the garlic cloves and saute for 1 minute until fragrant. Add the dried ginger and mustard powder and stir constantly for 1-2 minutes. Add in the coconut aminos, tahini, and date syrup. Use the spoon to break down the tahini and stir until sauce is well combined. When slightly thickened, remove from heat and pour into a large bowl.
  3. When the steak tips are done, add them to the bowl with the Garlic Sesame sauce. Toss to coat the steak tips.
  4. Serve hot garnished with sesame seeds if desired and enjoy! I like serving mine with rice (use cauliflower rice for Whole30) and steamed broccoli for a delicious "fakeout" meal.
